I adrenaline rushed jumped out of bed, and sure enough, the entire place was THICK with smoke, and smelled HORRIBLE!
I went into the kitchen first, and could tell nothing was wrong in there, then went into Matt's room...sure enough, there he was, sound asleep on his couch, with the chair on fire!
Got him awake, and we extinguished the fire, but the entire place was FILLED with that awful, thick smoke that comes from burning foam.
It is now 12:25, and the stench is still in the air!
Here's an after photo -

Oh the joys of being married to an alcoholic.....
He is in total denial that his being drunk had nothing to do with it, and a hot ash must have just fallen off his cigarette.
Whatever.
I know he was drunk last night, and in my heart I know it happened because he was drunk.
Thank God my daughter has breathing problems, so the smoke bothered her and woke her up! It could have been so much more tragic then loosing a chair.
We DO have a smoke alarm, which is hard wired, not a battery, but it did NOT go off!!
After everything calmed down, I checked the smoke alarm, and the little red blinking light is not functioning. Time to call the maintenance people in!
Ironically, the guy that lives in the apartment catty corner to us is a paramedic with the fire department....

Wow - what a scary night! I'm so glad all you lost was a chair. We lost EVERYTHING once in an apartment fire that started exactly how you described. My neighbor was drinking and fell asleep on the couch w/ a cigarette in his hand. Our whole apartment, and many above and on either side of the drunk smoker's apt. were total or almost total losses. Luckily everyone got out. I'm glad your fire was not that serious!
